Note to young drivers: If you’re going to take your mom’s car for a late-night spin, don’t double the speed limit while driving past a police officer, then blow the engine while you’re being pulled over.

That’s what Abbotsford police dealt with on Highway 1 near Sumas Way early Sunday morning.

An officer in an unmarked police vehicle spotted a 2003 Mazda Protégé going in excess of 200 km/h in a 100 km/h zone at about 2:40 a.m.

“When asked why he was travelling at this speed, the driver responded he wanted to see how fast the car could go,” said Abbotsford police spokesman Const. Paul Walker in a statement.

“Of note, the vehicle he was operating was his mother’s.”

The 20-year-old, who was still on a restricted “N” licence, probably didn’t realize that driving at those speeds in a car nearly as old as he is would lead to trouble — and not just from police.

As Walker noted in a tweet, “The car was going so fast that the engine blew.”

Despite his “incredibly poor choices,” which put himself and others at risk, Walker said the driver was co-operative, was not impaired, and had no previous interactions with police. There was also no one else in the car.

The Mazda, or what’s left of it, was impounded for seven days and the driver faces tickets for excessive speed, driving without consideration and failing to display his “N” tag.

He could also find himself with a suspended licence, a “probable outcome” because of his inexperience, said Walker.
